An August 21 article in Bloomberg BNA's Medical Devices Law & Industry Report and other publications, "Cyber Risks Mounting for Networked Medical Devices," discussed how recent cyberattacks that hit hospitals and pharmaceutical companies have spotlighted the risks of using medical devices that connect to the internet and transmit sensitive personal data. Day Pitney's Eric Fader was quoted in the article.

Eric told Bloomberg BNA that industry concerns about medical device security are not new, but the recent "WannaCry" cyberattack increased awareness among the general public that any device connected to the internet is potentially at risk for attack. "If we were to chart the number and severity of cyberattacks over time, I think we're still near the bottom of the hockey stick unless manufacturers stop marketing vulnerable products and users get smarter regarding security compliance, including controlling access and installing necessary updates and patches on an ongoing basis," Eric said.
