Miami Beach's new minimum wage law, which is intended to
raise the mandatory citywide wage to $13.31 by 2021, was struck
down on Tuesday by a Miami-Dade circuit court judge who ruled that
the ordinance was preempted by state law. The city will
appeal, and the preemption issue, which affects the ability of all
Florida cities, counties and other local jurisdictions to pass
their own minimum wage ordinances, may be decided by the Florida
Supreme Court.
Florida's minimum wage is currently $8.10 and increases (or
stays flat) every year effective January 1st. Miami Beach's
minimum wage was set to implement its first increase to $10.31 on
January 1, 2018, followed by annual increases of $1.00 per year
until the local minimum wage reached $13.31 on January 1, 2021.
