Syria

In view of the continued brutal repression and violation of human rights in Syria, the Council of the European Union has added new restrictive measures against Syria. These new measures include:

  • New prohibitions and prior authorisation requirements for the sale, supply, transfer or export of equipment, goods and technology which might be used for internal repression, as listed in new annexes to the existing Regulation 36/2012. Also, prior authorisation is now required with regard to technical assistance and brokering services as well as financing or financial assistance related to such items, and to the provision, manufacture, maintenance and use of these items.
  • Prohibition of the sale, supply, transfer or export to Syria of certain luxury goods.

These additional restrictive measures entered into force on 16 June 2012.

Burma/Myanmar

In view of the positive developments in Burma/Myanmar, the Council has suspended the restrictive measures against Burma/Myanmar until 30 April 2013, with the exception of the restrictions pertaining to arms and related material, as well as equipment which might be used for internal repression.

Iran

Since our previous newsletter no new restrictions have been added to the EU sanctions against Iran already in force. However, the Dutch government has published a revised version of its Iran Handbook.
