South Carolina PPP Loan Fraud Settlements Show False Claims Act Enforcement Is Still Active
In a recent settlement, five South Carolina companies agreed to pay a combined $7.9 million to resolve allegations that they violated the False Claims Act (FCA) by improperly obtaining over $5 million in Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans. The five companies include EuWe Eugen Wexler US Plastics Inc., Mankiewicz Coatings, LLC, Fukoku America, Inc., AWL Automation, LLC, and Stoba USA Corporation.

Court Of Appeal Upholds Order To Strike Claim Effectively Seeking A Public Inquiry
In Dorceus v Ontario, 2026 ONCA 321, the Ontario Court of Appeal upheld an order to strike a Statement of Claim containing broad allegations about the Ontario government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. The decision reaffirmed that courts are not political institutions and that legally unfounded claims are appropriately weeded out by motion to strike, even if characterized as “novel”.
